Hand embroidered and beaded snake carefully stitched onto unbleached cotton twill, framed in a 3” wooden hoop, finished with a looped and knotted paper string for display.

I have an irrational fear of real-life snakes, so why did I feel that I should embroider a few? Imagery of snakes is powerful, and I find a few possible messages in them:

• A warning: Sometimes the most charming things, living or otherwise, may come to bite you in the end.

• A challenge: If I set aside my fears, perhaps I can find beauty there.

• An empowerment: The snake as a representation of you and me: our own unique beauty is powerful and can be intimidating to others, and that is ok. What if we could learn to wield that power?
